International Women’s Day- Jazz Skingle
Today is International Women’s Day. An important day for women, feminists and everyone! We need you to be bold for change. Around the world, women (and men) are doing their part for equal rights why can’t you? Well you can. There are so many unfair rules spread across the globe which need to be stopped.
Firstly, women are suggested to be quite literally ‘worth less’. Many women do the same job as men but get paid a fair amount less. In the Uk, the gender pay gap is just over 18% which means women are paid a quarter less than their male counterparts. An example of this is the cast of American Hustle. Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence got paid less than their fellow male co-stars even though they played bigger parts and did the exact same set hours. This is a despicable concept that should not be tolerated. We have equal rights and therefore we have equal worth.
Furthermore, women are judged by what they wear but a man can walk around in public topless. In some parts of the world women are only allowed to show their eyes and hands. If they walk outside with more than this they will bring shame on to their household as well as have many rumours spread. Women should not have to hide who they are. I am aware this is a choice however, some are forced. Another example would be Emma Watson, one of the biggest feminists, being accused of not being a feminist just because her boob was ‘hanging out’ on a Gucci fashion magazine. How is this acceptable? How is a feminist determined by what they wear. Many people don’t understand what a feminine is so here is the definition: a person advocating social, political, legal, and economic rights for women equal to those of men. This is nothing to do with a fashion choice. As Emma Watson stated “Feminism is about giving women choice, feminism is not a stick which to beat other women. It’s about freedom, it’s about liberation, it’s about equality!”. I can only echo her statements.
In addition, some women can’t even do simple tasks such as driving and voting. In Saudi Arabia, women are still not allowed to drive. A woman was caught driving, only a couple of miles, and sent to prison. If this wasn’t punishment enough, it was published in the news and her son, was abused by fellow classmates for his mother bringing shame upon the house. Another astonishingly appalling issue, baring in mind we are in 2017, women are still not allowed to vote in some parts of the world! How has the world thought that we have different rights because of a gender? Voting is a choice. A choice everyone deserves to make. Your vote is your voice and the voice of everyone who have struggled, so that you may have a voice. There is still a struggle but we have made progress. We still need everyone to be bold to change the right to vote for everyone.
Finally, a global women’s strike takes place today to showcase ‘a day without women’. It takes place on today International Women’s Day as this global day is for celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The movement is to highlight just how important women are to the economy and business. Those who aren’t able to take the day off without suffering repercussions can show their support by wearing a red hat in solidarity for the day. The Women’s March website says the strike to happening to, “Recognise the enormous value that women of all backgrounds add to our socio-economic system- while receiving lower wages and experiencing greater inequities, vulnerability to discrimination, sexual harassment, and job insecurity.”
In conclusion, if you are a women, you are worth no less than anyone else. The same for men, lesbians, gays, blacks, whites and mixed race. In fact these names mean nothing at heart. We are all human. We are all equal. We may be unique but yet we are the same. We deserve the same. You can do almost anything you out your mind to. You can swim the deepest ocean and climb the highest peak! You can face adversity and still walk dauntless. You are strong, beautiful, compassionate and much more than words could ever say. Because you are a women. Happy International Women’s Day!
